The fact that visitors can experience De Stijl in architecture is unique to the Northern Netherlands. Make sure you visit the Van Doesburg-Rinsemahuis in Drachten and the former National Aviation school in Eelde.
Drachten has strong ties to De Stijl art movement. It was here that Theo van Doesburg completed his first large assignment: the colour design for 16 middle-class houses. One such house is currently under restoration and will be completed as a museum residence in 2017. Another icon is the National Aviation school complex in Eelde, which was the final masterpiece of De Stijl artist Bart van Leck. In Leeuwarden, the focus is on Dutch Design.
During the theme year, Museum Dr8888 will stage four large exhibitions in which De Stijl plays a central role. Eelde will concentrate on modern-day art inspired by De Stijl, and in Leeuwarden you can enjoy Dutch Design with ceramics, and can discover how designers take advantage of the light.
