2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Dutch art movement known as De Stijl. This will be celebrated in the Netherlands in the theme year titled Mondriaan to Dutch Design. Many designers and architects have been influenced by De Stijl in the past and it still inspires artists to this day. Numerous exhibitions and events in 2017 will bear witness to the legacy of De Stijl artists such as Mondriaan, Rietveld, Van der Leck and Van Doesburg. This will be combined with the work of leading modern-day designers.

The Northern Netherlands region will also be joining in this jubilee celebration! During the Mondriaan to Dutch Design theme year, Museum Dr8888, the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics in Leeuwarden and RLS Eelde will be presenting a wide range of exhibitions centring on De Stijl and Dutch Design and focusing on colour and light.

RLS Eelde

This industrial complex in Eelde is the final masterpiece of De Stijl icon Bart van der Leck: he designed the colour scheme in 1958. During Mondriaan to Dutch Design, this former National Aviation school can be visited during working hours. Check programme RLS Eelde

Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics

The Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics in Leeuwarden is home to the most beautiful ceramics. During the theme year, you can enjoy Dutch Design with ceramics in the Princessehof, and you can discover how designers take advantage of the light. Museum Dr8888

Museum Dr8888 in Drachten is one of the leading modern art museums in the Northern Netherlands, with a very special (inter)national collection. Drachten has strong ties to De Stijl art movement. During the theme year, Museum Dr8888 will stage four large exhibitions in which De Stijl plays a central role. Check programme Museum Dr8888

From Mondriaan to Dutch Design

In 2017, it will be 100 years ago that the Dutch art movement known as De Stijl was established. This will be celebrated throughout the theme year in numerous inspiring events and exhibitions.
The Mondriaan to Dutch Design theme year is a cooperation between NBTC Holland Marketing, Den Haag Marketing, Tourism Utrecht, Amersfoort City marketing, Visit Brabant, Leiden Marketing, Tourism Gelderland and Museum Dr8888. Participating museums include the Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Centraal Museum Utrecht, De Lakenhal Leiden, Kröller-Müller Museum Otterlo, Dutch Design Eindhoven and the Municipal Museum of Helmond.
